Mr. Science - Germ Detective

(Ages 4-8)

About This Study

This study will explore if interviewing children over the internet (Skype) is an effective alternative to interviewing children in a traditional, face-to-face format. During Session 1, your child will play science games with an assistant. In Session 2, your child will be interviewed about what s/he did. Some children will be interviewed in a face-to-face format. Others will be interviewed over the computer. This study has been approved by MSU's Institutional Review Board (FY15-16-405).

Compensation: Families are compensated $60.00 cash ($30 for each visit).

Session 1 (campus visit; about 30 minutes) In your child's first visit, s/he will play Germ Detective with Mr. Science (an undergraduate assistant) for 15 minutes, learning about germs and good hygiene behaviors. We've had hundreds of children play Germ Detective over the years. Most children find the activities fun and engaging. All demonstrations are safe. We will give you a short book to read to your child prior to your next visit.

Session 2: (campus visit two weeks later: about 30 minutes) Two weeks later, you will return to campus and your child will sit for a short interview with a female research assistant. She will ask about your child's previous visit with Mr. Science. Afterwards, a different female assistant will do some memory activities with your child. Each part will take about 15 minutes.
